Day of the Dead,
Mictecacihuatl welcomes
Rhinoceros to Mictlan,
by Thomas Neubert, 2016
acrylic on canvas,

The Day of the Dead is no longer just a Mexican Holiday; it is an International Holiday. In Mictecacihualtl welcomes Rhinoceros; I further appropriate the Day of the Dead to honor and reflect upon recent extinct and endangered species. Specifically, the Northern White Rhinoceros is extinct or near extinct, depending upon whom you reference. Thus it is being welcomed into Mictlan by Mictecacaihuatl. In this painting there is a diagonal line across this painting. On the Death side of the diagonal line are painted the names many species of animals that went extinct in the 20th century, e.g. the Saudi gazelle. On the Life side of the diagonal are painted the names of species of animals that are currently endangered, e.g. the African penguin. Finally, in this painting, Rhinoceros is portrayed upon a table with pomegranates. One half of Rhinoceros has been carved to the bone and decorated as in the day of the dead; the other half is raw meat dripping of blood to be savored with fresh pomegranate.
